I attended an all day workshop on Saturday and wanted to offer some bullet points of suggestions, ideas, or even random thoughts that were offered throughout the day at the various sessions I attended. These are not listed in any particular order. Many participants were interested in the making of videos to be used in flipped classrooms so there was a lot of discussions about videos and screen casting techniques in particular.
- Videos
- Should be short
- For some people short is 5 minutes
- For others short is 10-12 minutes
- Should be short
- Students need to be taught how to watch the videos
- Pause, pause, pause!
- Watch, summarize, question
- Some teachers use quiz questions within the video, others use questions on the last frame or slide
- Animate your voice
- Work with a partner
- Students like picture within picture because it helps them connect with you
- Techsmith offers excellent videos covering how to use their software Snagit and Camtasia
- Camtasia offers popups which are useful if you have forgotten to say something in a movie
- If you make a mistake in a movie keep the movie running but don’t say anything for a bit and that way it is easy to cut out the bad part as the quiet part is easy to spot and a long quiet spot indicates a mistake was made
- Some teachers like to use Wacoms with their laptops when they are doing movies for their students
- Perspective from teachers: 80% student activity and 20% teacher activity, keeping in mind that the brain works when learning
- Some teachers are beginning to use Doceri
- Some teachers are using Prezi for flipping
- Some have accounts and can download the Prezi for students to watch offline
- Teachers might give a problem and then an equation
- Some do an example, then offer help, repeating a few times.
- Suggestions were made to look at the freehand cutting feature of SnagIt
- When using colors in your movie, don’t keep changing colors–it is distracting
- Use the annotation feature in YouTube
- Design your classroom so it promotes what you what you want your kids to know
- Expect lots of noise, especially at mastery level because students are working on different things at the same time, collaborating in small groups, watching videos on their cell phones, etc.
- Kids who get to teach a class get to the highest level
